Tips on writing a perfect argument and counter-argument for your next argumentative essay
Oh, yes!
I am here to provide you with some tips. Loads of tips actually. We all know that it's not easy to write an argumentative essay. Heck, it's not easy to argue in real life so you can’t even imagine how bad it gets on paper. But there are ways in which you can LEARN to write a good argument. Truly, you just need a bit of guidance. That’s all. As an essay writer, you have to know that you don’t know it all. This means that you need to learn a lot when it comes to writing even if you have been writing for years.
There is always a bit more to learn which is why you and I are here. I can teach you how to write a good argument AND a counter-argument and you can write the best essays ever.
So, let's get started.
Tip #1: Write a Thesis
Why?
Well, writing a thesis will help you form your arguments. When I Write my essay, I include the main arguments in my thesis. This means that I know what my main arguments are going to be beforehand.
Many students start an essay but they don’t know their arguments which is a HUGE mistake. You always need to have a rough outline of your arguments.
Tip #2: Research
You will need this.
If you are going to argue then you will need all the facts. Otherwise, you will seem like a person who has no right to talk about the topic. So, in order to get all the facts, you will need all the information that you can get.
This means you will spend loads of time researching. Like a lot, so beware.
Tip #3: Look for Fallacies
Logical fallacies.
They help you figure out which argument is valid and which is not. What you need to do is look for logical fallacies in YOUR arguments. Like, make sure that you are not attacking your opponent.
Make sure that you sound logical. You need to maintain a balance between emotion and logic. So, go through your arguments again, will you?
Tip #4: Know Both Sides of the Story
Essay writer can’t form an argument and a counter-argument if you do not know both sides of the story.
For example, if you want to say that we need gun control laws then ok yes you are valid. But you also need to know what the other side is saying. You need to listen to their arguments too… even if you don’t like them.
Tip #5: Address all Major Points
Like, you can’t present half of the story. You need to address all the issues related to your topic in your arguments so that no one can claim a logical fallacy. And by “no one”, I mean your professor.
If you don’t address all points then this will also mean that you are cheating the reader and that is UNACCEPTABLE.
So, go in-depth here.
Tip #6: Learn Refutation
Refutation is when you have a look at the counter-argument and then you prove it wrong.
Ok, first things first, you need to study the counter-argument. Then, you will need to provide evidence against the counter-argument. You can also refute without evidence but that requires you to logically lead the reader away from the point made by the opposing side.
Either way, it's your choice.
Tip #7: Types of Arguments
There are majorly five types and you need to learn them.
We have “fact” where we argue if a statement is a fact or not.
Then we have “definition” which is about the dictionary definition of the topic at hand.
Third comes the “value” which is about the importance of the topic.
Second, last comes the “cause and effect” where we lay out a cause and discuss its effects.
Lastly, we have a “policy” where we mostly discuss policy changes.
Tip #8: Free Writing
This can really help you with your arguments.
Here, you let your mind wander and write whatever comes to your mind. More often than not, you will find that your mind comes up with good arguments once you take the extra stuff out of the way.
This means you will have to keep writing until you come up with a good argument.
Tip #9: Mindmapping
This takes free writing a step further and organizes it.
Once you are done with freewriting, you need to cross out all the bad ideas and select the three best arguments that you have. Then you will link them to the other stuff that you have come up with.
This will help you focus and build a backbone for your arguments.
Tip #10: Evidence
Present evidence.
No matter how logical you are or how well you write, you should present evidence to back up your argument and even the counter-argument. A simple citation will do wonders to convince your reader of your point of view.
This is by far the best way to strengthen your argument.
